Participants must be at least 15 years old to compete.
What skill level is required to participate?
You must hold a Canoeing Ireland Level 3 Kayak Skills certificate (this will be checked by CI) or an international equivalent.
Do I need to have insurance to compete?
Yes. If you’re a Canoeing Ireland member, your insurance is covered when you provide your membership number. Non-members will need to purchase a one-day insurance when purchasing the event ticket.
What do I need when purchasing my event ticket?
You’ll need your Canoeing Ireland membership number (ensure it’s valid and correctly entered) and a debit or credit card for payment.
What is the format for the Friday Freestyle event?
The format consists of jam heats, with 2 minutes per paddler. The top 6 senior men and women will advance to the finals, where their best of 3 rides will count using the ICF scoring system.
What are the rules for the Whitewater Time Trial on Saturday?
Missing a gate will incur a one-minute penalty. Participants must use modern kayaks under 9 feet with proper safety features such as grab handles and centre pillars.
Can I have someone shadow me during the race?
Yes, if you are nervous, you can ask an experienced kayaker (not part of the rescue team) to shadow your run.
What is the format for the Sunday events?
The Palm Mass Slalom starts at 11:00 am, followed by the NRS Boater-X at 1:30 pm.
How do I win the overall?
The overall title for Galway Fest is based on the results from Friday (freestyle), Saturday (Time Trial and potential boater X decider for expert), and Sunday (boater- X) events.
Where are the parties held?
The Friday night and Saturday night party will be held in Galway city centre. A QR code or guest list will be required for entry.
What if I need to change my competition time slot?
If you need to change your time slot for a valid reason, you can email the organisers at galwayfest@gmail.com.
What should I do if I miss my heat?
If you miss your heat, there will be no rescheduling, so it’s important to be punctual.
Can I bring guests to the Saturday night event?
There will be extra tickets available for purchase for the Saturday night event if your guests need entry- keep an eye on our social media page for this
What happens if the weather conditions are unfavourable?
Weather and water levels may impact the event schedule. Event organisers may change the locations to avail of the best water conditions on the weekend, any changes will be communicated to competitors with as much notice as possible.
What safety gear is required for competitors?
Competitors must wear dry gear or neoprene, a whitewater-approved PFD (Personal Flotation Device), and a helmet. The organisers may refuse entry to anyone not properly equipped.
What should I bring for rescue safety?
While rescue teams will carry necessary rescue and first aid equipment, participants are encouraged to bring their own gear as well.
What should I wear during the event?
Dress appropriately for the cold and wet conditions, and be prepared for the possibility of extended waits. Flip-flops and shorts are not allowed.
Is there parking available at the event locations?
Parking will be limited. Participants are encouraged to carpool, and specific parking instructions will be provided for each day. For example, no parking is allowed in the usual Tuam spot for Friday’s event.
